After setting up Jewel Divas in 2008, I did a silversmith course to see how gold and silver jewellery making worked and whether making it could be a part of my business, but then in 2012 I considered styling courses to add to my repertoire and my jewellery business. I was going to go into people’s houses and clear out wardrobes and help women find the right colour and style clothing just for them.
I scoured the internet and somehow, and I’m not sure how, came across the Academy of Professional Image recognised by AICI, the Association of Image Consultants International.
I chose the two styling courses Personal Stylist and Image Mastery for Men and Personal Stylist and Image Mastery for Women, and the colour course Personal Colour Analysis Theory.
Unfortunately, I was left for months without my video conferences and final exams, which happened towards the end of the year, even though I did the course in January and February 2013. I also didn’t get my final assessment for my CEUs, but looking back, I would’ve had to work at it to keep them and that was obviously not going to happen.
When I planned out my business and how it would work, I chose to go with wardrobe and accessory styling as I love to organise and colour co-ordinate clothing, jewellery, accessories, and wardrobes. And really, women are quite capable of sorting through their own clothing and throwing out what they no longer want or need; they don’t really need someone else to do it.
But, sadly, with everything else going on in my life, especially at that time, all of that never came to be. And it got to the point where I was left feeling empty and annoyed at the time, money (it was a lot), and energy wasted on the courses. Not only because what I learned I already knew thanks to an old ’80s styling book I have, and of course, Google, but after it, I didn’t have the time or energy to do anything with it because 24/7 caring doesn’t allow you to do anything outside of the home. I wanted to do it as an extra part of my jewellery business, but that wasn’t going to happen. And still isn’t while life is the way it is.
Except for my own closet, I won’t be wardrobe styling anyone else’s any time soon. If ever. In my lifetime. Ever. In retrospect, I still think it was a waste of time. But…I did get my book, Closet Confidential, out of it, so something good came from those courses.
